Heads of Boundary Commissions in West Africa Pay Courtesy Call on Speaker of Parliament
A delegation of Heads of National Boundary Commissions in West Africa paid a courtesy call on the Speaker of Parliament, the Rt. Hon. Alban S.K. Bagbin, on Thursday 11 July 2024. The delegation was led by Major General Emmanuel Kotia, Commissioner General of the Ghana Boundary Commission. The visit was part of the programme line-up for the inaugural meeting of Heads of National Boundary Commissions in West Africa held at the Labadi Beach Hotel, Accra, from 9 to 11 July 2024. The aim of the meeting was to establish mechanisms between national and regional actors for a better articulation of implementation of border governance strategies in West Africa.
During the visit, the Rt. Hon Alban S.K Bagbin called for an urgent and collective action to eliminate all forms of language barriers that has impeded socioeconomic growth within the West African sub-region over the years. He said although the linguistic diversity in West Africa is culturally enriching, it often poses challenges to effective communication and collaboration among Member States.
He emphasised that “Language should be a bridge, not a barrier” adding that the meeting of the Heads of National Boundary Commissions in West Africa was significant in addressing this challenge among others. He called for a broader collaboration and partnership concerning boundary-related matters in the sub-region.
The Rt. Hon Speaker used the opportunity to assure the Ghana Boundary Commission of Parliament’s support particularly in the area of legislation to ensure efficient work of the commission.
